Hello all, hope you are all well?
I'm currently playing the whole of the Mass Effect series on PC between going to work and studying online with the OU.
I've been keeping my eye out on PS2 for while and last week I received an email with this link on it...
http://www.youtube.com/user/PlanetSide2/featured
I've been reading up a lot about the changes in PS2 and so far I like what I see, I was always a big fan of the 1st PS so perhaps I'm just looking at this with rose tinted glasses, what do you guys think?

I really enjoyed the original PS, even though I mostly sucked at it apart from sniping. Only thing that stopped me playing more was it gave me motion sickness. But modern games seem better at preventing that, so hopefully I can try PS2 when its out. The trailers look good, but I couldn't find any decent gameplay trailers, though I'd imagine gameplay is going to be similar to the original PS with graphical improvements and probably some more MMO type additions thrown in.
Anything with 3 factions gets my vote. Seems this is back in vogue at the moment, with Secret World, Guild Wars 2 and PS2 all being 3 faction.
How far have you got with Mass Effect series? When you get to ME3, make sure to install the Extended Cut free DLC before you get to the ending. Not that this changes the endings in any significant way, but it does at least provide some extra detail and closure to the story.
-
Hi Brigh,
Nice to see they don't seem to be bringing back BFR's :) It looks pretty good, though doesn't sound like they've really changed a ton of things (which maybe is a good thing) but just brought it up to date and varied some of the maps a little. And stuff like the customisation is nice (for eko!) but probably not that necessary (and possibly even a little confusing knowing who's on who's side??).
The best thing I think is they are saying it will be free to play, I sub'd to planetside quite a few times but after a month or two always felt that I wasn't playing enough to justify a sub, perhaps this will help and we can dip in and out when we feel the need to get back in our mossie again ! :)

Finished them all but currently replaying again from ME2 so will make sure I download the added content.
As for PS2 - I'm really hoping they don't spoil it with BFR's (from all accounts I think they know the mistakes which were made last time and hopefully won't repeat them).
The ability to just pop in and out has always been the main plus for me as I just don't have the time to dedicate playing online games for a long period without a lot of forward planning!

Hey Brigh,
PS2 looks good, really enjoyed the first one, but the subscription was a bit much. Good to see PS2 won't have that, just hope they won't make all customization payable, let alone some weapons. It does indeed look they aren't changing all that much (not necessarily a bad thing).
-
Hey All,
Hope everything is ok :)
I'm currently in the tech test for PS2 as of last week and all i can say is it still needs some work for so far is going to be awesome. Is deffo a game i think i maybe able to stick with and help me with resisting going back to WoW.
VANU ftw!
-
Hey Evander
Great to hear from you - will hopefully see you on the battlefield although not sure which side to play, tempted to try VS as I played TR and NC heavily in the 1st game!
Brigh :D
-
/wave Evan :) Vanu FTW !!!!

Signed up for the beta while looking at the link and got my invite for the closed beta yesterday. Didn't play yesterday, but just had a look and the starter area does look the same as in PS1, except with updated graphics. Will try to get some playtime this evening and keep you updated (even though there's an NDA) ;D.
-
glad you posted about this Eko, just checked my email and noticed that my Beta invite had gone into Junk mail so will download tonight and try and get on :)
-
Played a bit last night (Elani - VS - EU Beta 01) and didn't have a clue what I was doing ;D. Got killed a few times, managed to kill myself and think I killed someone else as well, but was just running around like a headless chicken. Guess I'll have to head to the beta forums for a little guidance :).
-
hehe, sounds like fun :) Glad you joined VS as well, hope they are still suitably purple :D
-
soooo..whatssit like then folks ?
They are offering an 'alpha squad' thingie I might take up as they don't seem keen to give me a beta invite. I'm kinda shocked as well that not only will PS2 be F2P but also there won't be a box cost? Can only assume you'll have to pay in other ways to compete (hope not?).
This alpha squad thingie seems to be that you fork out some wonga but they give it to you back with in game currency, wondering if it's worth doing (and on the plus side I get to play the game.....weeeeee!).
-
anyone planning on playing this?
I've just downloaded it and going to give it a blast to see what it is like
Brigh :D
-
I don't think my PC can handle it. I'm hoping to upgrade later in the year, so will take a peek at PS2 then. If you play it, let us know how it measures up to the original.
-
Just some initial thoughts
The game has more servers but less continents to play on so it condenses the fighting (no more ghost hacking a planet without anyone enemy) so it makes the fights insane - things move to fast and with classes having the ability to use jump jets it makes you think about the angles.
The classes are very clever, no more spending certs to equip a heavy weapon or max - instead you receive certs to change your primary weapon or perhaps add a laser site etc. You can swap your classes without penalty each time you spawn so one minute you can be a cloaker (you can't stay cloaked for long or fire your weapon without uncloakind) and the next be a heavy foot solider with a MPG and rocket launcher.
Considering it's free to play and the fact you can login and within a matter of minutes be hot dropped into a battlezone makes this a game worthwhile having a blast on.
I don't plan for this game to be a timesink but just some quick, free, MMO FPS fun :)

Sorry Brigh, I missed this. How's the lag? When i played last year it still seemed a bit of a problem, would be good to know if you think its sorted?
-
When I tried to play it I found it confusing (dropped where action was supposed to be, but couldn't find out where most of the time) and a bit laggy (when I finally did find a fight). While I liked the original Planetside, I never could get into PS2 for some reason.
Maybe I should give it another go, but I'm trying Eve Online for now and starting to like it. There's at least way more to do than when I last tried it (there's tutorials now explaining some avenues), even though it's still rather intimidating. It is a sandbox game after all which is going for almost 10 years now.
-
Yeah i know what ya mean. I couldn't get into it either though I must admit the lag was the biggest think putting me off, might try it again i guess as it's F2P.
Eve ? That's a cool game, i played it for a month or so a long time back and liked it back then, so I imagine it has got a ton better. Looks like the kinda game that could suck you right in though :)
-
It has altered slightly, I'm playing on a couple of EU servers and only once suffered some lag.
You still have to capture bases and towers but now there are different objectives - e.g. some bases will allow footsoliders to enter the compounds and vechicles have to wait outside until the base shield generators are destroyed.
I find the instant action button is often instant death or instant boredom - as the hotspots move so quickly often you are dropped into the mother of all firefights but it might not involve your race so it's instant death - other times the fight has moved on and you are dropped into an empty base. The best option is to deploy instead as this will ensure you spawn at a base/tower/mobile vechicle and at least you can grab a vechicle if you need to move on.
I'm honestly enjoying the changes they have made and I've not played a game since the original where you have fights involving so many people/elements.
I'm going to keep playing (as it's fun and free) so if anyone wants to join me then let me know and I'll tell you which race/server I'm playing on.
Brigh :D
-
I might try it again at some point (tho prolly not right now). But i bet it won't be to hard to find you anyway Brigh, I'll just look for the nearest red TR scum flying around doing solo missions in his reaver ;)
-
you may struggle then as I'm playing VS and now they have empire specific aircrafts (mossi - TR, reaver - NC and scythe - VS)
Brigh :D
-
ahhhh, finally you saw the light :) Purple ftw!
-
Started playing again and while I'm still clueless, I at least managed to get to BR 5 this time ;D. And is it me or do you get certs really slooooooooooooow?. Seems that I you want to advance faster it means paying up, but so far I'm enjoying getting killed in a bazillion different ways.
Big battles can introduce some lag, but it's been pretty good actually, better than it used to be at least.
-
yeah they can take a while, you can generate upto 12 certs when you are offline so if you don't play for a day you can still get a few
some activites will reap in cert points, a lot are support type actions like repairing (which anyone can do) turrets, if you are an engineer then make sure you always chuck down ammo packs which can be done every 10 seconds and doesn't cost anything - if someone picks up the pack you get xp and cert points - same goes for a medic.
-
OMG, repairing turrets after taking a base is awesome for gaining certs ;D. Invested those in my repair tool for faster repairs, hehe.
-
I always make sure that when I'm attacking a base I blow up every turret just so I get to repair them afterwards - best thing is you get XP and cert for blowing turrets up even when they are empty!
Which server/faction are you playing?
-
I'm mainly playing VS on Cobalt (Katsui). I do have some alts as well, but hardly played them so far.
Was in a decent squad yesterday and that was good fun. Went solo later on and somehow got overrun wherever I decided to deploy. Definitely less fun :P. I might look for an outfit to join later on, so I can get into more organized battles.

n00b !! (just for old times sake! :) )
-
I think I've only grouped once since playing as I prefer the ability to move quickly to where the action is there are some fights I don't like - I much rather defend than attack.

Come play PS2 with us, Las, they just released the Harasser, a 3-man vehicle ;D.
I'm really liking my Engineer even though I'm far from a killing machine, but dropping ammo, repairing maxes & turrets can mean the difference when you're pushing an attack or repelling attackers. Got into a really cool platoon last night and managed to upgrade my gun. The Solstice SF + under barrel grenade launcher is great fun, shame it only carries 2 grenades, but I guess that's what ammo packs are for. I think I'll grab sticky grenades as next upgrade or maybe a second anti personnel mine as it's fun to get a kill ages after you put one down :P.
I'm also considering grabbing some vehicle certs later, but I don't like the 1-man vehicles much and I can't fly (I crash against trees in VR). It looked like the Harasser certs were cheaper than the rest so might go for it eventually, but it needs a gunner really to be effective. Might get the anti-AA gun to drop those pesky reavers & mossies, hehe.
-
I think I prolly will as it sounds worth a revisit, problem is atm with my kinda limited gaming time i got into Witcher II so want to finish that off. If you're still both playing in a couple of weeks I'll prolly come say hello and see if the lags gone :)
-
will still be playing I'm sure :)
Like Eko I struggle to fly and even trying to use a joystick it's a struggle - the harasser is great fun though as you can kit it out with many options
Brigh :D
-
Alright, so I'm a year late to the party I know this, but started playing some PS2 now that I have a new gfx card that doesn't blow up when I try to play it :)
I realise prolly no one but Brigh is playing or intends to, but thought I'd post briefly. Lasiien on Cobalt (VS), being a newb.... (but I see you in the outfit I joined Brigh! Happy Accident!).
-
I spent the certs I had (wasn't much unfortunately) into the Harasser since Las and I had a lot of fun in one yesterday. Ok, maybe not at the start with me running into rocks & trees ;D. It went a lot better once I switched to 3rd person view. Didn't think I would have as much fun driving the thing since in PS1 I didn't much like driving tanks. Actually I still don't like driving tanks, but speeding around in the Harasser is awesome. It's a 3-man vehicle and even a MAX can sit in the backseat (and shoot afaik). By the way, I also found out you can repair the vehicle while in the backseat (best aim sideways as the repair icon is finicky).
Most fun was when I drove over a hill near a base we held and landed in the middle of some infantry, I drove over the Max while Las was blasting some others, then we turboed away. Didn't expect anyone over that hill and don't think they expected a Harasser jumping over and landing smack in the middle of them :). Was also cool to see gunner xp stream in at some point while repairing the Harasser.
-
Cool, I'll invest in a few harasser things too so that when yours is on lock down we can still get one :) I had fun in it too, most of the talk is that it isn't very good but I think as long as you use hit and run tactics it can be very effective. Didn't realise you can repair in the back seat lol, nice :)
And yeah that was cool jumping into that whole group of infantry, I am pretty sure we rotated 360 degrees on that one but landed right side up :D
-
We always landed right. Tried it in VR before and managed to land on the roof a few times (at which point it goes BOOM!), good I didn't tell you eh? ;D Though that was with the racer chassis. Think I'll go with Scrapper chassis (tighter turns), Vehicle Stealth (longer to lock on and won't show on radar unless close) & IR Smoke(lose lock iirc). I bought the PPA AI gun since I heard good things about it and from the little testing I did it feels great (awesome accuracy & range) and also have one of the AA guns (not sure if ranger or walker, but the faster shooting one). Not sure if AV is really worth it, since the Harasser can't take many hits itself, though outflanking tanks and hitting them from behind could work depending on how many shots you need to destroy one.
And yeah you need hit & run tactics with it, but with its fast speed & tight turns you can (try to) avoid being targetted. Standing still is just asking to get blown up :).
It was a bit confusing to drive at first, since the camera can face away from where you're driving and due to it being so fast you can end up rather far from the battle as well. Suprised you managed to kill so many LAs with me driving like a maniac trying to avoid getting hit too much :).
-
I've been absent these last few weeks while I finish my degree, my final paper is handed in on Thursday so you should see more of me.
I like the idea of the harasser so I'll have a look at the certs you can upgrade on it as well - the ability to repair without stopping is a great asset
Brigh :D
-
Cool Brigh, will be good to see you and get you out of that Max suit ;-)
-
Nice Brigh :). Actually you can stay in the MAX suit and hop in the back of my Harassar ;).
-
Come on Brigh, where are yoooouuuu?
I even used a load of SC from my membership to pimp my Harasser (Lumifiber, Tires & Camo) ;D.
Added the screenshots, with and without lumifiber active.
-
looking cool eko :-)
-
nice ride eko :) will be back very soon!
-
The real trick to looking cool though is hammering the 'g' key to put lumifiber off and on whilst also driving like a crazy person :-)
p.s. ping keeping me away atm eko, I'm like 200+ all the time, any better after update?
-
Nope, since the server merge it's gotten worse >:(. Login times are horrible and ping varies a lot tbh, it depends on the continent/population.
Driving like a crazy person I can do ;D.
BTW the resources reform & Harassers only costing 150 nanites, means you can pull Harassers non-stop. So even when you flip one right at the start you can immediately pull another. Even Lightnings at 350 nanites can be pulled almost non-stop. I've abandoned some when pulling the wrong one (AP instead of SKyguard or vice versa) which is nice :).
