Brigh, totally by accident stumbled across a post talking about how to fix chat/system message problems, maybe some of this might work. By the way, i'd suggest you back up (copy/paste somewhere else) some of these files/folders before you remove them just in case you want to get back to how you were:
If you are missing any chat channels or system message commands, such as ("/random", "/who
", "/played" or shift-clicking someone?s name) or unable to speak in the chat channels, please try the following steps to resolve the issue.
# Delete the chat-cache.txt file:
If you open the World of Warcraft folder, then follow this path: ( WTF\Account\\\) you will see a file called "chat-cache.txt", delete this file, and then try to log in again. WoW will automatically rebuild this file in the character's folder.
This is more of a quick solution that works in most cases. However it leaves the original cause still there. Something corrupted or didn't save that file correctly, removing the WTF, WDB and the Interface folder completely is advised.
If other characters are missing the channels and/or system messages as well; or the above does not seem to correct the situation then we will take further measures.
# Leave and rejoin the affected channel(s):
Leave the channel by typing: /script LeaveChannelByName("channel name")
---Example: /script LeaveChannelByName("Trade - City")
---Example: /script LeaveChannelByName("LookingForGroup")
Rejoin the channel by typing: /join channel name
---Example: /join Trade
---Example: /join LookingforGroup
Repeat for each channel that is not working correctly. (To see the full names of the channels you are currently in, use the /chatlist command.) Be certain that you type the line exactly how it appears here, the spaces before and after the hyphens are mandatory, capitalization is important. Also do not replace the word "city" with the city you are in, the channels are not named by the city they are in, just "city".
If you are still unable to fully utilize the channels in game, please remove the entire chat-cache.txt file from the affected character.
# Remove the WTF, WDB and Interface folders:
Be sure WoW is not running, then please remove these three folders from the World of Warcraft game directory; WTF, WDB and Interface. These folders contain temporary data and frequently altered files that may have become corrupted. This will also remove any custom UI's that may contribute to the problem as well.
You can move these folders to the desktop or another directory if you wish to retain the data, however for now please start WoW without those folders present. Also do not use any third party programs to start WoW; often some custom UI's will place a shortcut for you to start WoW from, please use the (.exe) in the World of Warcraft directory
