Title: Neverwinter MMO
Post by: eKo on May 09, 2013, 05:44:31 pm
I only noticed today that the Neverwinter MMO went open beta a week or so ago.

I started a Halfling trickster rogue (there's only 4 classes so far: rogue, fighter (2h or s/s), wizard & cleric) on Beholder. Really notice it's made by Cryptic as it has a ton of customization options (yay!). I've hardly played it (servers went down for emergency maintenance after I finally created my character), but it looks rather nice. I haven't looked into the pricing of the items they offer, but it is possible to buy those with in-game currency as well (though it most likely will be a slow process). I'll be able to tell more once the servers are back online :P.

Halflings, yay :D Must admit I'd missed any hype for it, a quick google suggests it seems to be getting some good press but don't they all usually for a while :) Be interesting to know if you think it's genuinely free to play or if it's pay to advance :) If you ever get off the character customisation screen that is :P

Played a bit more and so far I'm liking it. Graphic-wise it's slightly more cartoon-like than Guild Wars 2, yet has a lot of detail. Animations are not as fluid as GW2 or WoW, but they're not exactly stiff either (better than SWTOR & TSW) and they have some neat little touches like chest & door opening animations. The cut scenes are nice too, there aren't too many and they've been relatively short so far. The quests are fully voiced (so far, I still remember the intro island of AoC >:() and they're relatively good (not up to Bioware standards of course). While it runs fine on my PC, once I enter the city of Neverwinter it starts to lag (understandable with so many players & npc's in there).

It's been fun so far, even though I'm only level 5.

How long is the open beta set to last? Wouldn't mind taking a peek. How big was the download?
Title: Re: Neverwinter MMO
Post by: eKo on May 10, 2013, 07:34:10 pm
Download was about 3.5 Gb. From what I gathered it's an open beta like planetside 2 was (people are encouraged to spend money and there won't be a character wipe at launch), which seems to happen more and more with F2P games. It doesn't seem like any content is inaccessible for F2P players, what the cash shop seems to offer is mainly convenience items (character slots, bags, dyes, ...) and they're not nagging you about it either.

Gameplay is more action/twitch based like Cryptic's other MMO's (City of Heroes/Villains & Champions Online at least, haven't tried Star Trek Online).

p.s. I'm sure I'll give it a go, starting download now, though gaming time is quite limited so not really sure how much I can grp up and stuff

oh dear Cern.... :)

Pfft, I did all the jumping puzzles in GW2 - it only took me about a month of playtime and five smashed keyboards :)

3.5GB sounds manageable, might have a look over the weekend.

The more I play it the more I notice how polished it all is (especially for a game in open beta). The UI is really good & intuitive: you have all the information you need at a glance, it's movable and also scalable. Shame you only have 2 character slots, but I guess they need to make money somehow (character slots can be bought).

PS: I'm playing Katsui Arusara & Eara Arusara on Beholder.

I think my handle is arusara, so to add me as friend you just have to add @arusara, no need for a character name.

Post by: Cernos on May 11, 2013, 10:11:04 pm
Well I've got it installed and was in the character designer .... where I spent a long time (of course) .... then got booted out .... and now can't connect again. I guess everything went down for maintenance.

When it's back I'll probably make a Halfling Guardian. Or maybe a Halfling Cleric. Or maybe a Halfling Rogue ..... oh I dunno, a Halfling anyway :)

Don't think I'll make beta but happy it seems to be a good game :)  Is it much like DnD online, and how much like PnP game is it?

What are th skills and abilities like compared to DnD and spells, do characters to what they do in the PnP version or does everyone get odd abilities? etc etc

When is it released for real?  Whats the level cap and what realm is it set in?  Forgotten Realm, Greyhawk, Eberon, other?

Sax.

Yay! We're gonna have a Halfling army ;).

It's like a regular MMO (including instances & PvP) rather than DDO. It's based in Forgotten Realms and on the 4e ruleset, but that's where my knowledge of DnD ends. They're using what I assume are custom classes: Trickster Rogue, Controlling Wizard, Devoted Cleric, Guardian Fighter & Great Weapon Fighter with skill trees & feats, but I have no idea how well they correspond to the official rules. The cap is level 60 btw.

A really cool feature is The Foundry which lets you create your own adventure which can then be published and played in game. I played one so far (I am Slayer) and it was really good.

Bah, 4e, meh.  Tbh I don't have 4e hate but I prefer 3.75 which is Pathfinder.  They made some serious changes going into 4e and it polarised the communities.  My grp dislikes it alot, I have only played 1 or 2 games of 4e, it seemed ok but dumbed down and streamlined and very balanced.  I find variety is the spice of life, not melange ;p

They should check out the White Wolf stuff and come up with some good ideas imo!
Title: Re: Neverwinter MMO

Well I tried Guardian Fighter and got him through the noob zone. Seemed what you'd expect for sword and shield in a MMO. But I couldn't get my Halfling male looking how I wanted so will reroll him.

Then I tried Trickster Rogue and wow what a difference. Fast paced, very twitchy but lots of fun. So, I now have a level 8 Halfling Rogue called Cernish on Beholder.
I think you need my 'handle' to find me though, which is @Cernow

Your handle is your account name and is needed to add friends because the system is <charactername>@<handle> and only the handle part is unique - wonder how long before two Legolas are spotted in the same location, imagine their disappointment :D

Servers were down for maintenance but back now.

Been enjoying this game so far, the challenge of completing quests with the only healing available being HP pots has certainly added a new way of fighting - I was just going toe to toe with enemies but now I'm a lot more responsive to their moves etc.

I've now got a healing companion now so I might just end up going toe to toe again but I'lll try not to :)

Title: Re: Neverwinter MMO
Post by: Cernos on May 13, 2013, 02:39:13 pm
Been enjoying it too. The solo game is quite challenging because of the combat mechanics and the D&D style lack of health regen outside of campfire and potions. That said, I got my heal companion now and it does make things easier.

The game looks great visually and seems quite polished for beta. It definitely captures some of the D&D feel and the player-made content is a nice touch.

I did a few skirmishes on my rogue last night, the orc assault. Zergy fun, 10-15 minutes a run.

I also did my first dungeon at around level 18, the Cloak Tower. Standard PUG rush with very little tactics, but we got through it ok. Nice environments, boss fights were standard tank n spank. But it's a noob dungeon so probably not representative of what comes later.

The F2P experience seems fair while levelling. The cash shop seems mostly aimed at convenience and cosmetics rather than content unlocks, plus the inevitable powerups / boosters and keys to unlock the gambling chests. There's a useful post on Reddit here (http://www.reddit.com/r/Neverwinter/comments/1dry0g/neverwinters_f2p_model_what_you_need_to_know/) which explains how the currencies and cash shop works. I think it'll be possible to enjoy the game casually as F2P as long as you can restrain yourself and not feel the need to open every purple chest they throw in your way :)

So when does this actually get launched?  You lot gonna have it completed by then or what? :)
Title: Re: Neverwinter MMO
Post by: Lasiien on May 18, 2013, 09:57:57 pm
Not sure about launch but as there is no character wipe its kinda academic if you ask me. Still plenty of bugs but you can play the game free of charge and still have some real fun, however if you start to spend in the store I think it could get ultra expensive ! :)

Plenty of d&d fun to be had so when you get your house sorted Sax come and join :) Cern and I were just talking today about how cool the treasure chests that attack you like in d&d are ;)

p.s. pretty easy to level, within a week of pretty casual playing i am level 30, cern is level 40 the powerleveler ;)
Title: Re: Neverwinter MMO
Post by: Lasiien on May 20, 2013, 01:37:27 pm
well, you called it Cern - your 'MMO launch radar' was correct and they did a rollback. Lukily i only lost a couple of levels, forums are full of whine also I see! Strange they didn't make the decision sooner really.
Title: Re: Neverwinter MMO
Post by: Cernos on May 20, 2013, 02:25:58 pm
Yeah, they took too long to act and decide. I don't think a 7 hour rollback is enough, I can't see how anything but a full wipe can fix the problem.

Turns out the bug that was exploited has been around since closed beta and was inherited from another Cryptic game, STO where it also happened. People claim to have been quietly abusing it for weeks and laundering the proceeds, but it only went into meltdown at the weekend because someone posted the details of the exploit on the forums.

It seems beyond foolish to mix an open beta with a live cash shop, especially if they knew this exploit was in the wild and not fixed.

Shame because the gameplay is fun. But it feels like you're adventuring in the midst of RL fraudsters, money launderers and gold farm slaveshops.

My SSD (an OCZ Vertex 2) decided to give up today, luckily I have an old HD lying around, so I'm now reinstalling Windows (it's installing updates (137, zzz) now). My games & data are on seperate harddrives so it's just time lost reinstalling and not data loss. I was planning on buying a new, bigger capacity, SSD anyway, so I guess it might as well be now :). Will RMA the old SSD anyway, since I might be able to use in my Mom's laptop (which is slooooooooooow).

I'll logon once the updates are installed.

Title: Re: Neverwinter MMO
Post by: eKo on May 25, 2013, 10:16:38 pm
I've got a level 18 cleric alt. Before you get your companion it's not that easy to solo, afterwards it goes fine (I'm using the Man-at-Arms). Problem is that once you play as rogue, all the other classes feel weak ;).
Title: Re: Neverwinter MMO
Post by: Saxif on May 26, 2013, 12:53:13 pm
I tried Cleric to 5th and now Guardian to 8th and I prefer the Guardian, Xan says Wizards are OP though :)

I guess the Rogue is super dps?  The instances seem so fast and frantic that meaningful tanking doesn't seem to exist as I remember it, or am I just out of touch?  Is tanking a 'shout' that make foes focus on you, or do you have to hit critters still to taunt them?

Game seems good overall, will prolly play on and off :)
Title: Re: Neverwinter MMO
Post by: eKo on May 26, 2013, 09:33:41 pm
Aggro is more or less broken now, clerics are better add tanks than GF's :P. And since the main boss tactics seem to be 'MOAR ADDS!' it can get silly at times. Only played a GF until level 13 so not sure how their aggro works, but their taunt (like most AoE's) is capped at 5 targets. So I think it's mainly target swapping and hitting mobs to taunt them. From what I've read a conquerer GF does solid dps and with aggro as it is now you might as well go dps I think.

BTW since I swapped out some skills on my cleric (forgot to swap a relatively crappy heal spell for a dps one) levelling goes a lot faster.

Well I dinged 60 on my rogue \o/

Thought I'd share a few tips and things I've learned along the way.

* Save your Astral Diamonds. You'll need them at 60 to buy some starter epics off the AH (to save grinding for them). When I hit 60 I had about 125k AD. I spent 50k on the AH and I'm now in full T1 epic gear. Not top gear of course, but not too shabby and more than enough to run endgame dungeons and PvP.

* Train Leadership as a profession and get up to 3 slots soon as you can. Then you can run 3 x the Protect The Caravan missions which gives you a total of 600 Astral Diamonds every 2 hours. There's a longer version (8 hours) which you can run overnight that rewards 400 AD per mission.

* Don't vendor unwanted enchantments. You can Fuse them to upgrade them to the next tier at a 4:1 ratio. They also sell very nicely on the AH, even the low ones. Just don't sell them for copper / silver like this muppet did :/

* You can set the Field Of View to a custom value with the command /gfxsetdefaultfov <number> and bind this to a hotkey so you can set it each session.

* You can access the Auction House, Professions and Mail from a web browser. Very useful. Go to https://gateway.playneverwinter.com/

* Some Auction House search filters are broken in game but actually work on the web browser version (e.g. level, buyout price sorting etc). I found it easier to do my AH shopping in the web browser, even when logged into the game.

* Gold is mostly useless once you've bought your mount and perhaps an extra companion. You will need some gold for injury kits if you die a lot, but other than that it doesn't help much. Astral Diamonds is the main currency.

* Don't bother too much about collecting the various reputation insignias and tokens as you level. You'll never collect enough to actually buy anything useful before you outlevel it anyway (why does every MMO always make this basic mistake?). You can however pass them to alts via the mail.

* You can't mail gold to alts, but you can mail gear, mounts, enhancements, tokens etc. Just compose a message with @yourhandle and send it and all your characters on the account can read it. Useful way to store junk too, though I wouldn't put anything important there in case there's some kind of mail crash.

* Rogues are due a firm whack with the nerfbat - don't forget, you read it here first ;)

Congrats Cern :)

I've not much time to play at the moment but I'm taking full advantage of being able to log into the portal and level my professions - even a low level can unlock additional slots, it might say reach level 30 but it also unlocks when a profession reaches level 3 as well.

I've concentrated on Leadership as I'm leveling faster than I can make items from the others

just a note - if you use the portal to level leadership and gather AD's then don't collect the result online (your AD's won't appear on your character), log into the game and collect the results.

Thanks Brigh. I had noticed this happen once or twice and wasn't sure if it was something I'd done wrong. It does work properly sometimes too and I have had diamonds waiting when I logged in. Seems to be a random bug, but best to log into the game to collect stuff to be sure.

Well, experience has shown that the patch made a significant difference to GF at the 20-29 lvl BG at the very least.  I have been doing significantly better than before, it's much easier; anyone seen any GF whining, or are they too few and far between still?

Also Cern mentioned Bots, has there been any proof of Bots in PvE/ PvP yet?

People still playing btw?  I don't get online enough to see how often people play!

Yeah I think GF's have had a bit of a buff (or perhaps the nerfs to others balance it up a bit), but they also improve as you level I read.

Not had much time to play am afraid, missed the end of beat event thingie, was it any good?

End of Beta event was an undead invasion of the city. Portals opened around the city every 30 mins for a few days, then every 10 minutes on the final day. Idea was to farm the mobs that spawned for bags which gave a chance of a rare Skeletal Dog companion, plus a few other goodies. Fine in principle but it suffered the usual MMO curse of lag when you honeypot too many players to the same location at the same time.

As for bots, plenty of evidence they're commonplace in game, as you'd expect from a cash shop MMO. You won't see them in regular questing areas or in pre-endgame PvP (nothing worth grinding). But you will find them anywhere there's endgame purples to be farmed for the AH, which currently includes endgame PvP.

Glastonbury - nice one, enjoy! I used to go every year but not been for a long time now. Would love to go again one year.

Ahh right, sounds like most end of beta events to be honest Cern ... they sound epic but the only epic experience is the slideshow that you get :) Must admit I enjoyed the WOW one which was a similar invasion etc. It was pretty fun seeing all the chaos :D

enjoy Glasto Sax ! :) I see Portishead are on at the same time as the Arctic Monkeys, that'd be a tough choice for me !
Title: Re: Neverwinter MMO
Post by: Saxif on July 01, 2013, 02:16:07 pm
Well, survive Glasto :)

We wanted to see Portishead but chose to go and see Sinead O'Connor instead, the idea being that Portishead are easier to see than Sinead.  We did catch the last 2 songs of the Portishead set though on the Other Stage and they were awesome, defo a band I'd like to see fully.

Also saw the Smashing Pumpkins, though I didn't think that much to them and I think it is him now rather than them, Billy Corgan?  He shouted out at the end of his set 'God bless America!'  Meh and he had a 'I am great attitude' put me right off.

I caught an upcoming band called Suun on The John Peel Stage, they were quite good and if you like Portishead, would be worth checking them out on Youtube.

Caught a number of other acts, bands and DJ's as well all round the site, my calfs are ruined from walking soo much! :)

Nice one Sax, sounds like you had a great time.

Glasto is so vast that deciding which acts to see and then actually managing to get between the stages in time can be a real problem - not just the distances and crowds involved, but also all the distractions! Gets exhausting. The last few times I went we took a different approach - each day we camped out a particular stage for the whole afternoon or the whole evening and just accepted whatever acts were put in front of us. Some real surprises and eye-openers, especially on the alternative stages. Some shockers too. Great fun :)

I watched the Stones on the TV coverage, thought they were wonderfully shambolic (in a good way). Would love to have been there, but don't think I would have wanted to contend with a 100k crowd crammed around the Pyramid Stage.

Yeah sounds pretty awesome :) I'll check out Suun also Sax, thx.

The worst thing about festivals has to be toilets though, by the third day they get so manky :) Prefer just going to gigs these days as a few hours is about right but a whole weekend can start to get tiring, but still I should make more effort !
Title: Re: Neverwinter MMO
Post by: Saxif on July 02, 2013, 09:30:19 pm
Yeah the bogs varied in quality, most were pretty bad, though there were fewer chemical toilets and more long drops.  When you needed a shit you either had to time it right and go to toilets that were decent, like the composter toilets or do a squat stress position and try and squeeze it out!  I didn't have any toilet disasters thankfully, though being so tall, many of the toilets only came up to my shoulders!  I obviously didn't check out what other people were doing :)
